Varieties

Did you know that there are different kinds of blueberries? Each variety has a unique set of characteristics from size, flavour to when they are harvested. On our farm we grow 5 different types of blueberries; Reka, Elliott, Bluecrop, Calypso, and Duke being our main variety. Have you ever wondered why some blueberries are sweeter and some are more towards the tart side? Reka and Elliott are more of a tart blueberry whereas Bluecrop, Calyspo and Dukes are sweet to very sweet. Each variety tastes differently and looks different in colour as well as size; this even includes the bushes they grow on.

A smaller blueberry does not mean it will be less sweet but the variety and if the berry is ripe determines the taste. Unlike other fruits such as apples, blueberries will not continue to ripen once they are picked from the bush. Our blueberries are harvested at the right time to ensure that you get the best tasting berries no matter what variety is in season.

Frozen Blueberries

The main variety that we freeze and have available for sale to the public is our sweet Duke blueberries. These blueberries are one of our most popular varieties due to their taste and plump size. Freezing blueberries actually improves the availability of the antioxidants and fresh or frozen blueberries are a great source of vitamin C and magnesium. Consuming blueberries on a regular basis has been linked to many health benefits including helping prevent heart disease, improve brain health and helping moderate blood sugar levels.

We often get asked the question of do I need to wash my frozen blueberries? The answer is no, not if you are purchasing your blueberries from our farm. Since we use natural and non toxic products on our berries they are safe to eat fresh or frozen and you don’t need to wash them unless you prefer to. All blueberries have a natural coating that when over handled or washed is removed from the berry. By keeping this natural coating on our blueberries we are able to freeze our berries without worrying about them all clumping together. Frozen blueberries when packaged and stored correctly can last for 1-2 years.

Klaassen Farms Promise

Fresh is best is one of our farm mottos, we only distribute what we would feed to our own families. It is important that all of our blueberries not only taste great but that our customers receive only the freshest berries. This means that when you eat a fresh or frozen Klaassen Farms blueberry it was picked within a 24 hour window (or less) from the time it was delivered to one of our roadside stands, grocery partners or frozen and packaged at our farm.

All of our blueberries are GAP (Good Agricultural Practices ) certified.
