Until Next Blueberry Season

By August 21, 2017Blog

With blueberry season over you might have some extra berries in your fridge that you want to store for later baking or eating. There are different varieties of blueberries, if you have just picked up some Klaassen Farms blueberries you will have our Elliot variety which is perfect for baking. Elliot blueberries are large, very firm and less sweet than the earlier varieties. These berries can be sweet, but typically they are much tarter than any of the other varieties, but this in turn allows for an extremely long shelf life of 1-2 weeks.

Did you know that blueberries can last up to 1 year when frozen? This means you can enjoy our blueberries all year around!

How to freeze Klaassen Farms blueberries

1. When you freeze your Klaassen Farms blueberries ensure that all berries are completely dry. Take a container of your choice or plastic resealable bags and store them in the top shelf of your freezer. Be sure to rinse your berries right before using them.

2. If you do rinse your blueberries before freezing, make sure they are completely dry by patting them with paper towel after straining away any excess water. Once your berries are dry they will be ready to be packed up into freezer containers or plastic resealable bags.

3. Portion your berries into convenient sizes that are perfect for baking, making smoothies and jams, or eating! When blueberries are at the height of freshness this is the perfect time to freeze them as this ensures that they will last for months to come. Which will keep your home supplied with fresh and local blueberries until our next blueberry season.

Thank you for choosing Klaassen Farms, Chilliwack Blueberries. See you next year!
